LaHaie's  Christmas Surprise Cedar Chest Discovered

This handcrafted custom cedar hope chest was made as a surprise Christmas gift for Ed's wife Alicia. But as we all know it is really hard to keep things hidden from wives and while bookkeeping, she discovered it when she found the record of the down payment. Ed chose Aromatic Cedar from our list of woods for this special Heirloom Chest. It is a Walker style chest with a standard wood lid and scroll foot trimmed base. A finch size, it measured 48 inches wide 19 inches deep and 22 inches high with feet. .

Ed chose the clean line of the walker style box and standard wood lid to go with the contrasting look of Aromatic Cedar with its mixture of light and dark wood accented with branch knots.

Three support rails attached with sliding dovetail ends add strength and allow the top to move but remain flat 
Two counter balance hinges keep the lid open until you want to close in your special possessions.
 

Ed chose these strong solid brass Chippendale chest lifts from Horton Brasses to help lift this soon to be heavier chest.
A close up of the half blind dovetail joint that adds  longevity to this special heirloom shows on the end but not the front to keep its clean line
Scroll feet and base trim molding elegantly provide a solid foundation to support family keepsakes.
